In 2009, The International Year of Astronomy, Dublin Lyric in
association with Astronomy Ireland, presents Bertolt Brecht's play in
a version by Desmond Vesey.
"The Life of Galileo depicts one of Brecht's most immensely alive,
human, and complex creations: the great Renaissance scientist in a
brutal struggle for freedom from authoritarian dogma. Unable to resist
his appetite for scientific investigation, Galileo comes into conflict
with the Inquisition and must publicly adjure his theories, though in
private he continues working on his revolutionary ideas."
Brecht's play is one of the masterpieces of theatre in the 20th century.
