In this issue, we look at the growth in the application of geophysics, which makes it possible to 'look' underground for hidden archaeological features or even dead bodies - thereby removing the need to dig for information. Tom Kennedy has a report on the old lead mine at Ballycorus near Shankill, Co Dublin, with its landmark chimney stack. This mine was a thriving operation in the 19th century employing hundreds of men at its peak. We also report on the ambitious 'Encyclopaedia of Life' project, where researchers aim to catalogue all the world's known species, plant and animal. The winning essay in the annual RDS McWilliams Young Science Writers' Competition, which describes the beauty of the mathematical number 'Phi' is also featured.
